- The seeds must be non-hybrid. A non-hybrid seed will produce a plant from which seeds can be harvested and planted the next year. This is essential since the goal is to be able to produce food every year. (Hybrid plants do not reproduce.)
- Seeds must be kept out of moisture. Even moisture fluctuations in the air will degrade their life expectancy.
- Seeds must be kept cool. A sealed container of seeds will store four to five years on a shelf at 70 degrees. Seeds stored in a root cellar, refrigerator or freezer will store much, much longer.

Shelf Life
There are some non-hybrid seed companies that make claims that the seeds will store for 20-100 years but this is only under optimal conditions with a decreased fertility rate over time. Preparedness Seeds claim that their seeds will keep AT LEAST 4-5 years on a shelf at 70 degrees and 10+ years if kept refrigerated or frozen.
Adequately dried seeds sealed in moisture barrier containers can be stored safely for 4 years at 65 -70 degree temperature and much longer at lower temperatures. Each 6 degree drop in storage temperature may double the storage life of most seeds. Critical factors are temperature and moisture content. Store as cool as possible. Can should remain sealed until ready for use. For best results store unopened can in a refrigerator or freezer. Keep out of sunlight.
