The Heirloom Garden Seed Can

…If ye are prepared ye shall not fear…

Face it – we live in troubled times. No one knows what the future will bring. Perceptive people create and expand their food storage and other supplies in preparation for possible shortages in the future. People of all ages, income levels and backgrounds are filling up their spare rooms with buckets of wheat, oats and beans and cans of freeze dried meats and vegetables.

However, a year’s supply of food storage will not be enough to cover all of the body’s nutritional needs. And it is just a stop gap means to allow prepared people the time needed to plan for their future needs. A GARDEN is a must for the serious minded person. For healthy living the human body requires and craves the vitamins and nutrients found in living foods like fruits and vegetables.

The Answer to healthier living is Seeds

The dilemma is – that eventually we will need to be able to grow our own food. And, in order to grow our own food we must have SEEDS. Seeds are the beginning of self-sufficiency and independence. Seeds contain the hope of every new season – the promise of life if carefully stored, planted and nurtured.

Storing Seeds Long Term

  1. The seeds must be non-hybrid. A non-hybrid seed will produce a plant from which seeds can be harvested and planted the next year. This is essential since the goal is to be able to produce food every year. (Hybrid plants do not reproduce.)
  2. Seeds must be kept out of moisture. Even moisture fluctuations in the air and will degrade their life expectancy.
  3. Seeds must be kept cool. A sealed container of seeds will store four to five years on a shelf at 70 degrees. Seeds stored in a root cellar, refrigerator or freezer will store much, much longer.

Heirloom Seeds are the Answer
These Seeds are Non-Hybrid, Non-GMO and are not chemically treated. Because they are non-hybrid, seeds may be harvested at the end of the growing season and then used for the next year’s planting – creating a self-perpetuating source of food in hard times.

Shelf Life

There are some non-hybrid seed companies that make claims that the seeds will store for 20-100 years but this is only under optimal conditions with a decreased fertility rate over time. Preparedness Seeds claim that their seeds will keep AT LEAST 4-5 years on a shelf at 70 degrees and 10+ years if kept refrigerated or frozen.

Adequately dried seeds sealed in moisture barrier containers can be stored safely for 4 years at 65 -70 degrees and much longer at lower temperatures. Each 6 degree drop in storage temperature may double the storage life of most seeds. Critical factors are temperature and moisture content. Store seeds in a place as cool as possible. Cans should remain sealed until ready for use. For best results store unopened can in a refrigerator or freezer. Keep out of sunlight.
